Now that cellular networks are starting to achieve broadband speeds in major markets, entrepreneurs are taking advantage of the faster data speeds on their mobile phones. For example, OmniWav Mobile's MBR-1100 (www. omniwav.com) is an in-vehicle system that lets you connect any Wi-Fi or Ethernet-enabled device to the internet. The vehicle broadband package costs $979, and the data service contract through Verizon Wireless is about $80 for unlimited use. Its range extends up to 300 feet, so you can still get online out side your car. A portable package version is also available so you can connect at your hotel, at a trade show or at a customer's site.
For a less expensive alternative, check out Novatel's Merlin V620 Wireless PC Card Modem (www. novatelwireless.com), which runs about $100 with a service plan. It also works with Verizon's EV-DO network and will keep your laptop connected on the go. Generally, data speeds aren't quite up to your office broadband line, but they're sufficient for use on the road. Check provider websites to see if these services are available in your area yet. As broadband network rollouts continue, expect the number of similar solutions and providers to grow.

Free phone calls with broadband offered by Eclipse Internet

Eclipse Internet, a broadband provider, has announced the launch of a new service called 'Home Broadband + TalkMore', providing customers with a combined broadband and home phone service.
The new service gives home users speeds of up to 2MB/s and free evening and weekend telephone calls to UK landlines for GBP19.99 per month.
The service combines broadband and phone services onto one bill and includes a free broadband modem for customers who are new to broadband, while those who already have broadband can switch to Eclipse free of charge.
Customers will also be provided with fixed rate calls for landlines and mobiles and competitive international call rates with the new service. Calls to other TalkMore customers are free and unlimited and customers continue to use their existing BT landline and phone number.

Most people don't know that they already have everything they need to start saving money using internet telephony, or VoIP. All you have to have is a regular telephone and high-speed internet access. That's it! If you have both of those, you are ready to start saving loads of money on local and long distance phone calls.
It is inevitable that VOIP will replace traditional telephone service at some point. The only question is when should you jump in?
VOIP is quickly becoming more reliable and receiving wider acceptance. In fact, phone companies are already taking advantage of the technology to provide cheaper long distance rates. Like any emerging technology, however, there are kinks in the system that are still being worked out.
Advantages:
Internet Phone Service has numerous advantages over traditional telephone service. The most obvious is the cost benefits. If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can make phone calls from PC-to-PC anywhere in the world for FREE! More common PC-to-Phone calls usually come with a small charge but are still much cheaper than regular phone service.
For a small monthly fee, you can sign up with a VoIP service provider and get unlimited calls within the country! International calls can also be made for a fraction of the cost of regular service.
Another advantage is its portability. You can make and receive phone calls wherever there is a broadband connection by simply signing in to your VOIP account. This makes VOIP as convenient as e-mail. When you're traveling, you simply pack a headset or Internet phone; then you can talk to family or colleagues for next to nothing.
Phone-to-phone VOIP is also portable. Internet phones are small and light enough to take anywhere. When you sign up with a VOIP service provider, the Internet phone or adaptor used by that service is assigned a unique number. This 'phone number' remains valid, even if your VOIP service is in Los Angeles and you're connected to the Internet in London. When plugged into a broadband connection, anywhere in the world, you can make and receive calls as though you were at home.
Features like call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and 3way-calling, are included with Internet telephone at no extra charge. While you're talking on the phone, you can send pictures and documents at the same time.
Disadvantages:
Unfortunately, there are a couple of minor drawbacks you may experience. The first is the fact that you would loose service during a power outage and the other is limited emergency calling.
Conventional phone service continues by the current supplied through the phone line during a blackout. This isn't possible with Internet phones. When the power goes, there goes VOIP service. Battery backups and power generators that provide electricity are the current solutions to this problem.
Emergency (911) calls are another concern for many potential customers as well. In the event that you need to call 911 but can't speak or have to leave, your call can be traced when dialed from a traditional phone. However, this is not the case with VoIP. Fortunately, there is currently technology being developed called 'e911' that will make this possible, so this will not be a problem for much longer.
VOIP also has sound quality and reliability problems. Data sent across the Internet usually arrives at its destination scrambled. E-mail and documents can be reassembled in the correct order when it arrives. Voice data also arrives scrambled, but it's more complicated because of the real-time nature of VOIP. Some data packets may have to be dropped when they don't arrive in time, in order to make voice connections with the least delay. This can cause brief silences in the audio stream.
Your internet connection speed and the distance of the call are the two biggest factors in the quality of the call. If you are in a high-traffic area this may also cause some loss in the quality of the conversation. Once again, technology is constantly being improved on and this is becoming less and less of an inconvenience.
While the disadvantages mentioned above currently present minor problems, it is expected that these will be corrected by the year 2008 and VoIP technology will have become the industry standard for telephone communication.

Broadband in general electronics and telecommunications is a term which refers to a signal or circuit which includes or handles a relatively wide range of frequencies. Broadband is always a relative term, understood according to its context. The wider the bandwidth, the more information can be carried. In radio, for example, a very narrowband signal will carry Morse code; a broader band will carry speech; a yet broader band is required to carry music without losing the high audio frequencies required for realistic sound reproduction. A television antenna described as "normal" may be capable of receiving a certain range of channels; one described as "broadband" will receive more channels. In data communications a modem will transmit a bandwidth of 64 kilobits per seconds (kbit/s) over a telephone line; over the same telephone line a bandwidth of several megabits per second can be handled by ADSL, which is described as broadband (relative to a modem over a telephone line, although much less than can be achieved over a fibre optic circuit, for example).

Introduction:
Broadband in data communications may have the same meaning as above, so that data transmission over a fibre optic cable would be referred to as broadband as compared to a telephone modem operating at 600 bits per second.

However, broadband in data communications is frequently used in a more technical sense to refer to data transmission where multiple pieces of data are sent simultaneously to increase the effective rate of transmission, regardless of actual data rate. In network engineering this term is used for methods where two or more signals share a medium.

Various forms of Digital Subscriber Line service are broadband in the sense that digital information is sent over one channel and voice over another channel sharing a single pair of wires. Analog modems operating at speeds greater than 600 bit/s are technically broadband. They obtain higher effective transmission rates by using multiple channels with the rate on each channel limited to 600 baud. For example, a 2400 bit/s modem uses four 600 baud channels (see baud). This is in contrast to a baseband transmission where one type of signal uses a medium's full bandwidth such as 100BASE-T Ethernet.

Multiplexing:
Communications may utilise a number of distinct physical channels simultaneously; this is multiplexing for multiple access. Such channels may be distinguished by being separated from each other in time (time division multiplexing or TDMA), in carrier frequency (frequency division multiplexing (FDMA) or wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)), or in access method (code division multiplexing or CDMA). Each channel that takes part in such a multiplexing exercise is by definition narrowband (because it is not utilising the whole bandwidth of the medium), whereas the whole set of channels taken together and utilised for the same communication could be described as broadband.

BellSouth was the first major telecom provider to commercially launch wireless broadband using pre-WiMax technology. The company initially deployed the service last August in Athens, Ga., and has since deployed in Palatka, Fla.; New Orleans, La.; Gulfport, Miss.; and DeLand, Fla. BellSouth plans to expand the service to additional cities throughout 2006.

Telenor to offer broadband phone service - report

Norwegian telecomms group Telenor ASA will reportedly start to offer broadband phone service over the Internet.

The service would allow customers to use conventional phones by hooking them up through a broadband line via the Internet.

Telenor would start delivering its broadband phone service on 11 April 2005, reported the online edition of the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

Wireless broadband service offered by BellSouth in Athens, Georgia

US telecomms company BellSouth Corp (NYSE:BLS) has launched its wireless broadband service in Athens, Georgia.

The new service is able to transmit signals between local radio towers and a desktop modem which is non-line-of-sight, to offer high-speed Internet access without the need to use a phone line, BellSouth said.

According to the company, the fact that the University of Georgia is based in Athens made the town a natural choice to be the first place selected to benefit from the new technology.

New Visions marries broadband, phone service

- What Is Now Visions? New Visions Power Line Communications, LLC is a fullservice network operator and systems integrator of broadband Internet access and telephone services, explains Carmen N. Branca, Jr., the company's president, chief executive officer, and founder.

- What does that mean? By utilizing the medium-voltage power lines of the local power utility, the company's focus is to provide affordable, broadband Internet services to homes and businesses. Service can be delivered by standard WiFi Wireless communication or lowvoltage power plug modem.

- So would you work on behalf of the power companies? Not exactly, Branca says. New Vision's products allow public and private electrical utilities, municipalities, and cooperatives to use their existing power-line network as a high-speed data pipeline, so they might become customers of New Visions, but New Visions wouldn't work on their behalf any differently than a company would cater to one of its customers. The utilities' existing power resources have the capability of delivering broadband Internet and telephony services to their communities. Utilities can also implement special utility services such as automated meter reading and power-outage and power-grid status reporting.

- Where will the company's revenues come from? The utilities? Not entirely, Branca says. "We will begin selling affordable high-speed Internet and voice services to the consumer and small business [markets]," he notes. Sales to utilities will follow.

- What are some of the challenges your company has faced as it nears the end of its research and development (R&D) stage? Branca says there are .many challenges for a new company" to face, including "hiring qualified personnel, installing our infrastructure, controlled expansion, [and being able to provide] quality customer service."

- Gov. George Pataki's press office recently Issued a news release Indicating your company will employ 153 within five years. Right now, you've got five employees. Aside from employment projections, where do you see your company In 2009? "Five years from now, I expect we will be a sizable company, continuing to expand, and adding new services for our customers to enjoy," Branca says.

- What is your background? Previously, Branca was executive vice president of operations of Enikia, a semiconductor company whose first silicon-based power line products came out in 2002.

- Has the company done any trial runs? New Visions has developed a new technology to deliver high-speed Internet services through existing electric-power lines. The company recently completed a pilot program with this technology in the village of Solvay. A few months, ago, the Village Board approved a 10-year contract with the company for system deployment of high-speed Internet service throughout their service territory, which includes about 5,000 homes.

- Earlier, you mentioned that some of your customers might be utilities. Now exactly are you catering to power companies? New Vision's Network Operating Center (NOC) allows the company to provide network management services to the electric utility industry, including load management, automatic meter reading, remote outage/fault detection, and a host of other services that will allow the utilities to better monitor their network and customer usage and to detect problems the source.

- What's the underlying technology driving all of this? The company specializes in networking hardware and software to enable the delivery of high-speed data and voice services over existing electric-power lines. New York is one of the only states in the nation where this new broadband initiative currently exists. Since electric lines reach every home and business, the new technology will make it easier for rural areas across the state to access high-speed Internet services.
